SOFA 2008 - Thermite Welding RR-Rail
|
The Sprue is cut hot using a hydraulic powered shear. The cut leaves little to grind off.
The Risers are broken off using a sledge.
Risers contain extra molten metal so that as the weld (or a casting) cools it has a supply of metal to replace the solidifying metal.
Without sufficient riser the weld would shrink and be very weak.
The first weld complete and the crew is setting up the second while the first cools. Due to the distance sparks are thrown the crew did not grind these welds.
In the field more fires are started from grinding sparks than from the welding.
The mold parts in place. We will have a better view for the second weld.
. . much more . .
