This slick design
using a truck drive shaft and U-joint at the pivot arm is the invention of Ray Clontz,
from Charlotte, NC and was built by Paul Garrett (now resident smith at John C. Campbell Folk School).
Left is the tracking adjustment and top wheel mount. The small diameter upper pulley must be custom made. The larger low speed contact wheel runs on standard pillow blocks. It could also be directly coupled to the 3600 RPM motor and save parts. Ray says he has six or seven belt grinders in his shop. Each one has a special purpose. Ray was also the inventor of the "spare tire clutch" NC-JYH |
