WINNER of anvilfire's Big HOT SUMMER Contest! Bub Giumetti of Gibbstown, NJ, was the first to correctly identify the manual tire changer and the brand Coats (left rear)! Bub's 150 pound Peter Wright anvil is on the way to him! This fine anvil was provided by Wallace Metal Work, dealer of new and used blacksmith equipment. Bub's response was on July 14th. Dan Baily also correctly identified the tire changer and brand but misidentified it as a model 1010, an air powered changer (I HAD one of those too, but not when the photo was taken). Dan's response was on August 24th. Sorry! We didn't have a second place in the contest! Maybe next time! Among the entries were many guesses a few of which WE couldn't even find! MOST COMMON INCORRECT CONTEST ANSWER - Tree stump, made by God. SECOND MOST COMMON INCORRECT ANSWER - The Bickern or Stake anvil. The stump is supporting the blacksmiths anvil therefore it IS a piece of his equipment. The Bickern is a truly wonderful antique most likely made in England in the 1700's (manufacturer unknown) and imported to the U.S. Like anvils, they were used by many craftsmen but when in a blacksmith shop it WAS a blacksmiths tool! Other guesses included the grey swage block stand (no that is NOT my welding), the spring, chain, a saw horse (where?) and a Craftsman wrench (I haven't found that one yet either!).
