These old stakes date from the 1500's and are absolute works of art.
There is absolutely no purpose in the central collar on this stake other than looks.
The massive flare creating the bottom shoulder is overkill but adds to the look of great strength.
I believe the side plates at the top of these stakes serve two purposes.
The first is that they reinforce the weld joining the working arms to the shank.
The second is to provide a slightly larger central working space.
That said, there is no reason for the decorative scolops on the edges OR the various decorations seen on other stake side plates other than artistic flourishes.
On this particular stake they have turned the corner of the hexagonal shank outward making it more difficult to attach and blend in the side plates.
Again, this is an artistic decision, not a pratical one.
Most other stakes have the flat side out to make it easier to make. - guru
