I'm not sure what's causing these holes in my apron. Its either welding slag or stomach acid.
For heavy work cotton aprons are worn, not leather. Leather conducts heat too well and gets stiff at high heat.
Cotton DOES occasionally catch fire. However, heavy cotton only smoulders unless it has a lot of frayed edges.
At a blacksmithing demo where heavy work was being done the demonstrator's cotton apron caught fire.
A number of people in the audience tried to tell him. Finally he stopped and patted out the flames.
Then said very grumpily from having his demonstration interrupted,
Don't you think I KNOW when I am on fire?
I couldn't get anything done if I dropped everything because of a little fire!
