Tonights Demonstration is a treble clef chime/dinner bell. These are real popular at the shows and sell good.

I make them out of 1/2" round, and it takes about 36" of stock. I start by taking a good heat and flattening the end out and letting it spread
Bill-Epps : |
|||
Bill-Epps : |
Then I go to the horn and set the flared part down so that the back stays straight, and start curling the end over the edge of the anvil.
Bill-Epps : |
|||
Bill-Epps : |
Now we start scrolling the end. Just like any scroll, you keep working your piece, and NEVER hit the same place twice, by gently tapping on the end and raising your holding hand.
Bill-Epps : |
|||
Bill-Epps : |
We roll this scroll up, until it is about 6" in diameter. The last picture is out of sequence. Sorry.
Bill-Epps : |
|||
Bill-Epps : |
Now about 1/2 way with what stock is left, we fold it back behind itself, and make the top loop. This should be approximately 10 to 12".
Bill-Epps : |
|||
Bill-Epps : |
When I get to this point, I take a good heat on the curled end and quench it. (This gives you the sharp ring, and also allows you to hold it in your hand. No heat
Bill-Epps : |
I heat the other end and turn over about 3/4 to 1" at a 90 deg. turn.
Bill-Epps : |
|||
Bill-Epps : |
I drive this back into itself and flatten it out and round it up to make the flag on the end.
Bill-Epps : |
|||
Bill-Epps : |
This is flattening and rounding up to make the flag.
Bill-Epps : |
|||
Bill-Epps : |
After I get to this point, I heat the bottom 1/2 to a good heat and quench it. Then take about 12 inches of 1/2 round, turn about a 3/4 id open hook on the end for a striker. Every place you strike you should get a little different tone. Try it just for the fun of it. Music lover like them.
Bill-Epps : |
That's it for tonight. Any questions???:)
Gordon : |
Spring steel? | ||
Bill-Epps : |
No not spring steel, regular hot roll stell.
Bill-Epps : |
Bill Says spring steel had a tendency to crack vertically when it is quenched.
Allen : |
What's The asking price ??
jerry : |
Bill, can cold rolled be made to ring with super quench?
Bill-Epps : |
It takes me about 15 minutes to make one of these and I get $20 for them.
scott : |
do u make this from tobing
Bill-Epps : |
Scott, No. 1/2" Round Solid Hot Roll Steel.
TimS : |
Bill, where the different points cross each other do they actually touch each other ( does this effect the tone)
Bill-Epps : |
TimS, they do not touch. Yes if they touch it won't ring.
scott : |
bill what is hot roll steel whats the differance
Bill-Epps : |
The main difference between hot roll and cold roll is $.90/lb., but cold roll is 1010 to 1018 cold drawn steel. It is straighter, truer with square corners, and round stock will be round. a 36 hot roll will not be as true, as straight or as round, but is more desirable for forge work and it runs between 20/25 cents lb. |
