That's a misnomer! The proper term would be "Metal Fatigue."
The natural form of steel is crystaline!
The belief that steel crystalized then became weak and broke was a common belief that continued in the 1900's well after it had been proven false.
This myth is found in many books printed in the 1800's and even the early 1900's
