Ringing in the New Year on Anvils Ring

"Dave sure likes ringing in the New Year on his musical anvils!"

Musical anvil circa 1600 The Musical Anvil has been around since at least 1500's as illustrated by Michael Praetorius in his 1619 treatis on musical instruments, Syntagma Musicum de Orgaonographia. Praetorius illustrated the anvil with familliar percussion instruments and a group of unsual strikers including an ax and a variety of hammers in this scale drawing. The scale is feet and fractions of feet.

The use of the anvil in orchestral arrangements is most famous in the "Anvil Chorus" by Giuseppe Verdi

Numerous modern smiths have been famous for being able to play music on their anvils.
