Machinery at the AFC Pavilion The pavillion at Tannehill State park was paid for by the AFC and built by the Alabama Parks dept. Both get use of the buildings. When the AFC is not using it their equipment is put in storage.

They are developing a pretty nice collection of tools here. To the left is a nicely equiped treadle hammer and next to it is an air hammer of the Ron Kinyon variety. This roughly built little air hammer does quite a nice job and was used by several of the demonstrators. It appears to be a crude machine at first but it has very nice control.

This was the first time I had gotten a close look at how these little hammers work. The air circuit is actually much simpler than it looks on most diagrams (I'll have to do something about that).

The small pilot lines connect the shuttle valve to a reversing or A-B valve that looks like a little limit switch. The shuttle valve does the work and those delicate looking little nylon hoses just push it back and fourth. Steve Kayne uses a very similar circuit on his air hammers. Simple, reliable, the way he likes it.
A rare 25# Little Giant Whats so rare about it? 25# Little Giants are probably the most common mechanical hammer around. . .

Its the heavy cast guides on this hammer!
Josh Greenwood has been telling me about one he had that was different than any he had ever seen. Its guides were better than all but the big 250 and 500 pound machines. Most of the Little Giant's "wrap around" guides are pressed 3/8" steel plate. They actually work better than the late model dovetail guides but are a little springy. These heavy cast guides are very ridgid and should require less maintence than other Little Giant types.

This little machine also has a sow block which most of the early 25# machines did not have.
